Counseling
The counseling department is committed to assisting both the educational and personal components of our students. Both the college advisor and the social worker are available to assist students in understanding their abilities and interests as well as formulating and achieving realistic goals, and maintaining satisfactory personal, social and academic adjustments.
Our College counselor regularly meets with students, be it individually or in a classroom setting, to help them map out their educational plans past DBCR. She ensures students register for standardized tests, informs them of the steps they will need to take both in the classroom and outside of the classroom to get into college and be successful once they arrive. She also works with parents, many of whom have never been to college or had a son or daughter apply to college.
In an effort to assist our students with the pressures they face from school, home, or their neighborhood, a licensed social worker is available to meet with students and their parents. If necessary, the social worker assists the family in connecting with outside resources to enrich the student’s life.
Every morning
Each student is greeted at the door with a handshake by an administrator. This greeting is a vital component of the DBCR identity. This allows every student a chance to speak with either the principal or the dean of students every day. Conversely the administrator is guaranteed an opportunity to affirm, remind, or counsel each student as they start their day. Students begin their school day by going to homeroom where they pray, say the pledge of allegiance, and hear a good morning message from a staff member.
Monday mornings
Every Monday our school community gathers for a weekly assembly. This time is used to congratulate students on their good work, inform them about upcoming activities or programs, or hear messages from outside speakers or presenters. Both the school president and principal use this opportunity to address the entire student body.
Advisories
Each student is assigned an Faculty Advisor. The primary responsibility of the advisor is to care for a limited number of students by establishing a strong relationship with both the students and their families. The advisor will meet with his or her advisees weekly to discuss topics such as academic or behavioral performance of the students. Parents should feel free to call their students’ advisors throughout the school year to check on their children’s progress at school.
